Our team of carefully trained advocates offer individuals the opportunity to learn and practice the skills needed to live independently in the community. At Community Outreach Advocates, training is provided in small groups on these subjects:
Financial Management
Social and Communication Skills
Nutrition and Meals
Consumer Rights and Responsibilities
Managing Your Personal Attendant
Managing Your Health and Understanding Managed Care
Accessing Public Transportation
Financial Management
This class is designed to increase knowledge and skills in handling money, budgeting, using bank services, proper credit and debit card use, maintaining records, filing tax returns, obtaining insurance, and protecting assets fraud and theft. Successful financial management ensures that Clients can handle their money as they prepare for employment, school, and/or life in their own community.
Accessing Public Transportation
Disabled individuals cannot go to school, work, visit family and friends, or participate in social and cultural events without transportation. Not everyone owns an accessible van or car with hand controls. This class looks at the many ways in which Clients can make use of public transportation, including transit service in the Chicagoland /NW Indiana area. Discussion focuses on the accessibility of buses, trolleys, and subways, the various fare options, how to file a complaint or commendation, getting on and off a lift safely, and basic wheelchair maintenance. Individual sessions are scheduled so that Clients can learn and practice taking their most frequent trips by themselves.
Managing Your Health and Understanding Managed Care
Maintaining good physical, dental, and mental health is the key to everyone’s full enjoyment of life. This course addresses the importance of annual physicals and screenings for potential chronic disease, dental hygiene, basic first aid, stress management, and sex and sexuality.
Clients learn how to communicate effectively and directly with health professionals as well as gain a better understanding of managed care, Medicaid, and Medicare.
Managing Your Personal Attendant (MYPA)
As a Center for Independent Living, it is imperative to instill the philosophy that disabled people can control their own lives and direct their own care. This course is designed for Clients transitioning into the community and are receiving personal assistance services for the first time or Consumers who seem to have difficulty working with an attendant to learn the basics of managing their own care: scheduling, daily needs planning, conflict resolution, interviewing, hiring, firing, and authorizing attendant timesheets.
Clients Rights and Responsibilities, An Introduction to Independent Living
Individuals new to Independent Living receive an overview of our philosophy, our history and disability rights movements as well as the laws leading up to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990. Consumers learn about their rights as disabled persons and the responsibilities they have to ensure their civil rights. Emphasis is placed on helping Consumers identify their local, state, and national representatives, the voting process, self-advocacy, and community resources available to assist Consumers who believe their civil rights may be in jeopardy.
Meals and Nutrition
In our Skills Training kitchen, Clients learn about nutrition, how to budget and shop wisely for food, how to use adaptive kitchen equipment, how to read and understand terms used in recipes, and how to make healthy and tasty meals. Consumers “feast” on the final product of each class assignment – preparing breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, beverages, and desserts.
Social and Communication Skills
One of the more difficult aspects of living in the community is developing relationships and learning how to communicate their thoughts and needs. Self-esteem, assertiveness, and the many different methods of communication are discussed. Clients learn when and how to disclose disability information when seeking employment and once on the job.
